We are absolutely delighted that a commitment to identify and support children with a parent in prison has been included in the Labour Party Manifesto for the upcoming general election.
On page 71, it states:
‘The children of those who are imprisoned are at far greater risk of being drawn into crime than their peers. We will ensure that those young people are identified and offered support to break the cycle.’
This ground-breaking policy commitment is the first time the issue of parental imprisonment has been included in a major political party’s manifesto. It reflects the appetite and commitment to create change for this innocent group of children at the highest level of policy-making.
This development is only possible thanks to Kerry McCarthy, whose recent 10 Minute Rule Bill on the need for a statutory mechanism to identify and support children with a parent in prison shined a light on this issue.
